What do you have to do to prepare your photos for the Web and why?.
All graphics need to be prepared for the web, whether they are text images, cartoons, drawings or photos. Anything not HTML text needs to be in the form of a graphic and therefore needs to be prepared for the Web.
Weight of the image which is measured in file size is one of the first things you need to do after sizing the height and width for the space in which you want to place your image on your Web page.
On a diet... compression of digital images by programs such as Photoshop and Photoshop Elements will reduce your image while maintaing the quality to facilitate faster browsing of your Web site for your visitors.
In graphics programs like Photoshop and Photoshop Elements and Fireworks, you will be given up to a four panel screen where you can view your image at different compression schemes to enable you to pick the smallest file size at the optimal quality. From there you will export or save your image with the lighter weight and you are ready to upload those images to the web or your blog.
The two most common choices for file formats to be used on the Web are .JPG or .GIF or .JPEG if you are a MAC user.
.JPG is a file format used primarily for continuous tone images which applies to all photographs and some other types of images where there a large sections of the same color rather than a number of continuous tones of color.
The .GIF file format is used a lot when you have a title or headline that you want to present more graphically than HTML text will allow. Sometimes simple maps, cartoons and some simple drawing would be preferrable in a .GIF format.
The .JPG compression scheme will better reduce continuous tone images while the .GIF compression scheme better reduces large areas of the same color/s.
